Karen Handel, a former GOP candidate who ran on a pro-life platform, shows her true colors. She just happens to be Susan G. Komen’s Vice President of Public Policy now.

"Just like a pro-abortion group to turn a cancer orgs decision into a political bomb to throw. Cry me a freaking river"

Komen has been seen as politically neutral in the past. I'm very sad that its mission has taken a radical right turn. Hopefully, the organization can fix this and return to neutral.

Well, we knew this all along, I don't know why they want to play us like we're stupid (with all of the excuses), I would have had more respect if they just leveled with everyone.

I probably would have just ignored them in the future, now I will actively campaign against them.

Me too. I plan on contacting any business that is involved in the pink ribbon campaign to let them know that I will not buy their products. It is clear that this is a charity with an agenda, and the agenda has nothing to do with women or breast health.

Example of Teabaggerification of US.

This money wasn't even for abortions, it was for breast exams. Makes sense for it to come from group fighting breast cancer. But no, logic and facts have no place in Teabagiverse. That requires more evolved mind than chimp's.

Should have Teabaggers in National Geographic?

Hey, good morning Robert, here's a great quote from Ms C's seed this morning, I hope you don't mind if I share it with everyone;

Planned Parenthood keeps its focus on women's health, plain and simple, and includes abortion as part of that comprehensive approach. It doesn't try to gussy up health issues, or prettify them, or politicize them. It's the other side that does the politicizing. Maybe the outrage will make other organizations think twice before they stab a beloved health organization in the back the way Komen has done.

There is way more to this than abortion. Planned Parenthood has done an excellent job of hiding behind the politics of abortion, however while so many want to ignore the fact of all the lawsuits that are piling up against Planned Parenthood, coast to coast, not connected yet very similar, demonstrating the poor leadership and misguided direction of the organization, the truth is slowly leaking out. As the light of truth continues to expose the darkness inside Planned Parenthood, I suspect many here who are so upset with this decision will find themselves in the same position, not wanting to be seen as associating with the criminal behavior and extremely poor judgment Planned Parenthood has participated in. I suspect this decision wasn't done lightly, but thoughtfully with the desire to distance the foundation from an organization that is about to explode.

Since you provided no proof of anything I decided to check for myself. You'e right that there are a lot of lawsuits but they are being filed BY PP against some states new, yet archaic, abortion related laws. The only thing I could find other than that were all on pro-life websites (all two of them) and were the typical type of lawsuits you see related to healthcare providers. Given the amount of people PP services it's a pittance. A typical hospital system deals with hundreds a year.

Perhaps you depend on Google to have all the current court records coast to coast, but that's not the case.

You may feel the need to defend Planned Parenthood and their decision to help a 14 year old who was carrying her fathers child get an abortion, and then sending her back with her father so he could continue sexually abusing the child, without contacting authorities? As for me, I am waiting for all of these lawsuits to hit the court rooms, expecting to see the organization exposed. This is one of the first cases coming forward, but there are hundreds like it waiting in the wings.

Each item you buy helps give free mammograms administered by clinics and hospitals.

PINK RIBBON merchandise floods the market...sneakers, hats, bracelets, pins, watches, Estee Lauder Makeup, teddy bears, yogurt, .....

Ridiculous to think that all these marketing schemes are helpful to the woman who need preventive healthcare the most when Komen nixed Planned Parenthood.

Once the public sees those pink ribbons on the bizarre multiple endorsements that the Pink Ribbon campaign has...their 1st thought will be....oh, a political agenda.

Nothing like a NON PROFIT taking onto its board a LOSER cut rate Polititian who couldn't cut it in Politics. So Handel takes her politics to the Non profit company who will now LOSE millions in donations, because those who supported them see through their political agenda.

I hope they fire her and others on their board, obviously they have LOST FOCUS of what their agenda is, and that was to help the underserved women who they just threw UNDER the bus, for the out of focus political agenda.

Abortion is not illegal. Planned Parenthood does not do abortions itself but will advise clients of all of their options. THAT'S why they are withdrawing support for Planned Parenthood. If they didn't advise clients of all options, they would not be a PUBLIC agency.

So what do you do in cases of incest or rape? I would personally feel it is not my right to make that decision for a woman. I would support a woman's right to be advised of all options. But it is HER choice over her body and reproductive rights. And that is the only way to operate fairly as a public agency.

Perhaps you need to pony up the case you are talking about. Here's a shocker for you. People lie. PP, or any healthcare provider, is not required to do DNA test or any other type of testing to prove whose child it is. If the girl and father lie there's nothing they can do about it. You also fail to mention the huge amount of cases PP has helped abused young girls. You also fail to mention that PP has never been found to be doing anything criminal in a court room.

Well, I kind of stopped paying attention to Common Sense Mike because of the behavior you speak to. This is how the person behind that user name operates. The will pop into a conversation, say something quite small and mean, inform us of their baseless opinions, but not once come back with evidence to back their claims. One positive is that the truth saw the light of day in this ugly episode. The Susan B. Komen Foundation is a right wing political organization. Even if they reversed their decision once they saw the hit their pocketbook was about to take, they were following the lead of a foot soldier in the GOP's war on women's rights. Planned Parenthood is the health and reproductive services provider to millions of low income women. I usually support other charitable organizations, but will make a contribution to Planned Parenthood this year. One thing is for sure, I won't be buying anymore pink ribbon merchandise that sends a portion of their proceeds to the Komen Foundation.

Let's say that as of today the Komen group no longer can support an organization that provides abortion because they don't approve of abortion.

Why would those who have donated to Komen in the past stop donating ?

Don't such people demand a 'right' for themselves that they do not want to accord the Komen group?

Think about it.

There's nothing to think about, Sam. In past 48 hours they've lied and lied and lied again. They've always presented themselves as an apolitical organization. Then they go and hire an avowed hater of PP as their Policy Director and drop PP. Then they lie about why. Then they change their tune and lie again. Then they claim it wasn't a politically motivated move while, literally, at the same time Handel is tweeting political rhetoric. Fact: no money SGK sent to PP went to abortions. It's for early screening for poor women.

Now, if a pro-life agenda was part of their mission statement and they were open about it or open about switching to a pro-life agenda that would be one thing. They would still lose a ton of supporters but at least they'd be honest. Right now they just look like political hacks trying cover their asses while lying to the people who have supported them.

Weak, real weak.

If liberals support the cause of beating breast cancer, and 'yesterday' thought Komen was a good, worthwhile leader in that cause, on what hypocritical basis do they change that now?

I understand why pro choice people don't like this, but they are demanding for themselves a right they want to withhold from Komen ( the right to decide who to give your money to).

No, sambonner, I do not dispute the right of SGK to give money where they want to give it. I just dispute their right to use MY money to further their politics. And the solution is easy: I will give them no more of my money. They have already lost their luster in the last few years, trying to squelch other, smaller, groups instead of encouraging everyone in the fight, they spend too much of their annual budget on administrative and overhead expenses, and there are other groups- in addition to PP- where my money has a better chance of being effective. This action has only shed light on all the problems with SGK that were already hiding in the shadows.

That's weak? That they are liars and are now taking a political stance in what is supposed to be an apolitical charity is weak? Yeah, okay. There's nothing hypocritical in no longer supporting a charity that lied about their motivations and are defunding the poorest segment of the population the easiest access to women's health.

If they were the only cancer research charity out there maybe, maybe you'd have a point. Since there are many more, you don't.

And please, stop the denying rights bull@!$%#. Nobody is saying Komen can't do whatever the hell they want. Just like nobody is saying donors can't do whatever the hell they want. Rights don't factor into this. That's a ridiculous and disingenuous statement.

And stop saying liberals. There are pro-choice conservatives and anti-choice liberals.

There is no hypocritical basis.

An organization that is supposed to be helping beat breast cancer removed funding for breast exams/mammograms for hundreds of thousands of women who could not afford it otherwise (750,000 breast exams last year through PP, mostly allowed via Komen funding).

While most people think that abortion should be legal, most people don't support the current state of abortion law; polling seems to suggest that the majority either wants abortion to be illegal in all cases, or legal only in the first trimester--and even then, possibly only in the case of rape, incest, and the life of the mother. A majority of people polled say that abortion is morally wrong. And pro-life identification runs neck-in-neck with pro choice.

In that environment, you can see why an organization that does not itself have a mission to support abortion access would want to pull back from funding Planned Parenthood, even for related services.

Unfortunately, while they easily could have declined to fund PP without much backlash, de-funding them sends an extremely explicit message that is probably going to cost them significant public support.

Thanks for posting something that makes my point above.

I will be more then happy when this religious facist is put on a boat to sail down that river to unemployment. This is already back-firing on the Komen Foundation and as they lose money & PP gets extra donations, they will eventually wake up and realize that womens health is more important then political posturing.

Sambonner: I thought SGK was trying to cure breast cancer, but now I find that they consider their politics more important than that cause. There are other organizations that are actively (and probably more efficiently) working towards that goal, and I will research them and find an alternate to support. I am not abandoning BC issues, only SGK. (Yeah, I know SGK likes to pretend they're the only game in town but they are in for a rude awakening. They've become big bullies, and I don't like bullies.)

      janice,

Planned Parenthood gives vouchers for women to go to facilities that are equipped with mammogram machines and radiologists on hand to read the scans.

What does not make sense to me, is WHY SGK gave $7.5 MILLION to Penn State, who is ALSO under investigation for child molestations. Thus, proving their reasoning to defund PP as the ruse that it is!

janice: Then why is it that they can't produce the name of one single organization besides PP they've stopped funding?

Because it isn't about "investigations" (if it were, they'd not give money to Penn State, nor would they accept money from BoA, both of which are under MULTIPLE investigations).

Nor is it about the fact that PP doesn't directly do mammogram screenings, their SECOND excuse.

It's politics, pure and simple. And once a "charity" kowtows to political pressure, it's no longer worthy of giving hard earned money to.

The same service is provided at Planned Parenthood. They hand out VOUCHERS for mammograms.

Okay IV here we go again.

As RI mom pointed out PP does not do the actual mammogram- neither does any OB/GYn.

Screening guidelines suggest that a women get a mammo gram AND a breast exam every year. The breast exam IS something PP can and does do. Then they can refer or voucher for the mammo. Very often women who don't have any or much health insurance can get their mammograms through gov and state sponsored screenings. Here in NY it's call the cancer prevention program.

PP also provides information screening for STD's/HIV, nutrition info, Birth control (both pills AND condoms) and a host of other services OTHER than abortions. Believe it or not many to have counselors on hand to discuss the decision making process with pregnant women.

There are few groups that are as audited and reviewed like PP. They have a very strict accounting system that PROVES where and how ANY money they get in is spent.

Your ignorance of women's health issues is your buisness, however the FACTS show this organization provides a vital role in women's health for those that might not have any or very little health insurance.

Do none of you people have access to Google? Or are you just so wrapped up in your bomb-throwing rhetoric that you can't be bothered to find out the truth.

Komen had initially funded 19 Planned Parenthood affiliates and, in the wake of new funding policies, will only continue funding three of those chapters. The three that will continue to receive funds are in Northern Colorado, Southern California and Waco, Tex., because “they are the only provider” of breast health services in the areas they serve, Brinker said.

"We were giving them money, they were sending women out for mammograms. What we would like to have are clinics where we can directly fund mammograms.”

How can this be justified. A receiver of donations complaining that the donator has stopped giving them donations? Is there any law that mandates a donator to keep on donating anything if the donator does not like to donate anymore?

I am of the opinion that the planned parenthood organization have abused their position by complaining about the cut. I really do not care whether the move was politically motivated or not because to force a donator to keep on supporting a cause that they do not want to donate anymore is terribly wrong. It is a case of the principle that no donator should or must be forced to donate regardless of the cause.

I dread the day when the charities I donate will tell me that I can not stop donating because it is wrong to do so. That's the time when I will not send a single penny to such an organization anymore.

PP has said no such thing. The most they have done is expressed disappointment. The reaction is from former donors to Komen who feel betrayed both by this move and how Komen has repeatedly lied about their reasoning.

Nobody is saying anything like you claim. Nobody is saying a charity can't do what they want with their money. At the same time donors have every right to not donate anymore and that's what is happening.

to force a donator to keep on supporting a cause that they do not want to donate anymore is terribly wrong.

And yet we have a high-level SGK member complaining that donors are balking. Aren't you being just a little hypocritical?

This is a typical reaction by those who think, what it yours aught to be theirs.

        It's "ought".

The rest of post is so senseless that there's nothing else to respond to.

Point? There is no point in what you said. What you said has absolutely no bearing on DONORS to a charity deciding they are going to stop DONATING to said charity.

My point is exactly what this is about. In fact it is so correct that three of you felt the need to attempt to invalidate it.

            Komen Foundation vs. Planned Parenthood.

I think that the foundation has taken on more than it can handle with this absurd political shift. They have the right to provide funding to whomever they want, but they will find out quickly that their donations will go down much more than the amount of those grants. Komen has decided to politicize themselves. They have made a huge mistake. I, for one, will be forwarding my family's contributions which used to go equally to Komen and PP completely to Planned Parenthood. Komen can seek their funding from the Koch brothers. They've lost all credibility as a legitimate non-profit.

Well said. Even with this morning's reversal, my image of Komen has been completely changed, and I will not be giving to them. My funds, when I have them, will go to PP.

It's got me wondering how much charity money is spent on merchandising that pink chit.

It's got me wondering how much charity money is spent on merchandising that pink chit.

The largest proportion of their spending is "Awareness", and that includes the marketing of pink handguns and buckets of KFC high saturated fat chicken that is a cancer risk factor.

Spending on research is down to 20% as of 2009, and they just cut stem cell research funding.
